Tony Eury Jr. appears out as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 Chevrolets at Hendrick Motorsports, the Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com have learned.
An official announcement regarding the change is expected later this morning, as well as the naming of a replacement.
Sources said Lance McGrew - who has worked with driver Brad Keselowski this season - is among those in line for the position.
Since joining Hendrick at the beginning of last season, Earnhardt has one win, 11 top-five and 19 top-10 finishes and one pole in 48 starts.
He qualified and finished 12th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup last season but so far is 19th in points after 12 of the 26 races used to qualify. Earnhardt finished 40th in Monday's rain-shortened and rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway without any mechanical problems or being in any accidents.
On Tuesday, team owner Rick Hendrick said no personnel changes had been made on Earnhardt's team but he left open the possibility that Earnhardt could have a new crew chief this weekend in Dover, Del.
"Could it change? We're talking about things. We're meeting," he said. "We're going to make decisions as the days go by. But we haven't made any decision as of right now."
