Round Scad (Decapterus punctatus)

Sport Fish of the AtlanticJune 4, 2009

The round scad, better known to North Carolina anglers as the cigar minnow, is a popular bait fish for grouper and king mackerel fishing. A schooling fish, the scad can be found at many depths. Anglers often use a Sabiki rig -- a long string of hooks dressed with nylon filaments -- to catch them around submerged structures. The fish average 6 to 8 inches in length.
