Pinehurst to host men's, women's Open in 2014

Staff WriterJune 15, 2009

Pinehurst will host golf's ultimate doubleheader in 2014.

The United States Golf Association will announce today that Pinehurst No. 2, already slated to host the 2014 U.S. Open, will also host the U.S. Women's Open -- the week after the men's event is played.

It will be the first time both Opens have been played on the same site on consecutive weeks.

USGA and Pinehurst officials had hoped to keep the news quiet until today, but word leaked out Saturday.

The Women's Open is conditional on final approval from local officials in Pinehurst and the USGA Executive Committee, both of which are expected to be formalities.

By playing both Opens at the same site, officials hope to maximize fan interest and media attention, in addition to saving on costs by building physical structures only at one site.
