Elliott Road Peak Fitness to close

June 17, 2009

The Elliott Road Peak Fitness is a sty. The AC doesn't work. Half the lockers are broken. Many of the treadmills don't work.

And come July, we're going to miss it. I should have known the lifetime membership I signed up for 15 years ago was too good to be true. I've been paying $160 a year, and plenty of folks who signed up before me have paid even less.

Sue Stock reported earlier this week how the Charlotte-based Peak is closing seven gyms (Click here). But the story didn't mention our clubs in Chapel Hill and Durham. So I made some calls.

Laura Haid, vice president of operations, said the Elliott Road club will close by July 1. Members will be able to go to the Durham club on U.S. 15-501, which will remain open.

The other Chapel Hill club, on Farrington Road, is being resold to the person who owned it when it was Millennium Health & Fitness, according to a front desk person. Peak members will be able to go there at least for 90 days, she said. Membership there currently runs $24.95 a month.
