Police catch suspect in fatal shooting last June in Raleigh

— Police arrested a man they had sought for a little more than a year and charged him with first-degree murder Friday.

Erick Robles Mendoza was captured after a foot chase south of downtown, inwoods off South Wilmington Street, Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

Investigators had been looking for Mendoza, 29, since June 14, 2008, in connection with the shooting death ofMiguel Najara Martinez, 37, of Raleigh.

Police have charged Mendoza with gunning down Martinez in the 500 block of Peyton Street. Investigators say Mendoza fled in a brown Chevrolet Tahoe. The abandoned SUV was located two days later.

Police took Mendoza to the Wake County jail, where he was awaiting processing Friday.
