Jimmy V pairings announced

Butler will meet Georgetown and Indiana will face Pittsburgh in this year's Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. The pairings for the Dec. 8 men's basketball doubleheader were announced Wednesday.

This will be the 15th annual Jimmy V Classic and the seventh played in New York City. The games are part of the fundraising effort for the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which is named for the late Jim Valvano, who led N.C. State to the national championship in 1983.


Mountaineers to have three TV games: Defending Southern Conference champion Appalachian State will make three TV appearances on league telecasts this fall.

Appalachian State games at Wofford on Oct. 17, against Georgia Southern a week later and at Elon on Nov. 14 will be shown on SportsSouth. The Elon-at-Furman game on Oct. 3 also will be televised.


Australian has swine flu at Games: Serbian health authorities have diagnosed an Australian athlete with swine flu at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

Several teammates who had contact with the athlete were isolated to prevent the spread of the disease among the 8,000 athletes and team members.

Among the athlete competing is Duke sophomore diver Abby Johnston.
