— Chris Richard drove in two runs with a home run and a single, and Joe Bateman pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to lift the Durham Bulls to a 4-3 victory over the Louisville Bats in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night.

Richard hit his solo homer in the second. His RBI single in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie.

Craig Albernaz and Ray Olmedo added RBI singles in the seventh and ninth for the Bulls.

Durham led 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, when the Bats rallied for two runs. But after an intentional walk to Kevin Barker loaded the bases with one out, Bateman struck out Wes Bankston and Chris Valaika to end the game.
