Bass Lake is part of the Community Fishing Program, which means it is stocked regularly with keeper-sized channel catfish by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. It is also part of the Tackle Loaner Program, which allows patrons to "check out" rods and reels. Bank fishing is permitted.

Size: 90 acres

Days/hours: Boathouse open during weekends from the end of February to Memorial Day; daily Memorial Day to Labor Day; weekends only Labor Day to mid-November.

Rentals/fees: Canoes and johnboats are available. Canoes cost $4 per hour. Row boats are $3 per hour or $8 per hour with electric motor. A photo ID is required, and renters must be at least 16.

"There's more catfish than anything else. The biggest cat has been 13 pounds," said Trevor Johnson, a park employee. "The best months to fish are March, April and May. The catfish stay on this side [where the headquarters is located] because of the feeders. There are blow-downs and stump fields on the backside."
