Big Lake at Umstead State Park

Umstead State Park has three lakes. Boat rentals are available at Big Lake. Private boats are not allowed, but anglers can bring their own electric motors. Motors are not available to rent. The lakes have no consumption warnings, so anglers can eat what they catch. Bank fishing is permitted, and Big Lake permits pier fishing.

Size: 55 acres

Days/hours: Saturdays, Sundays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Rentals: Canoes, Discovery boats, row boats; $5 first hour, $3 hour afterward

"Big Lake has crappie, largemouth bass, bluegills and yellow bullheads," said Bill Hartness, park ranger. "I've heard of people catching 10-pound bass. The crappie fishing is pretty good during the early spring. ... The lakes get pretty good pressure."
