About 50 cars were involved in a series of accidents on Interstate 40 westbound Wednesday, causing massive delays during the afternoon rush. Sergeant Jorge Brewer of the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety said the two biggest wrecks occurred at Miami Boulevard, exit 281, and Davis Drive, exit 280. Those pileups involved 15 and 11 cars, though Brewer couldn't confirm which pileup occurred at which location. Those wrecks and light rain contributed to many smaller two-car accidents as well. Despite the many cars involved in accidents Wednesday, no cars were severely damaged and no one was seriously injured. An ambulance was called to the scene, but Brewer said that was simply precautionary given the number of vehicles involved. Because the two biggest pileups occurred in such close proximity to each other, police closed off the three left lanes on the highway for about two and a half hours, forcing westbound drivers into the far right lane. Bumper-to-bumper traffic extended for about six miles, and the scene was cleared by about 8:30 p.m.
