New Triangle youth orchestra

Staff writerAugust 4, 2009

The Philharmonic Association is starting up a new youth orchestra in response to recent cuts and changes at local schools.

The Triangle Youth String Orchestra will give students a chance to perform in a string ensemble and give them the experience necessary to perform in one of the group's full orchestras - the Triangle Youth Orchestra, Triangle Youth Symphony and Triangle Youth Philharmonic. Because of budget cuts, Apex Middle School recently cancelled its orchestra, according to the association. And some students have been reassigned to schools without orchestras, which the school system is not required to offer.

The association's orchestras are open to musicians in the 4th through 12th grades. There is no entrance audition for the new Triangle Youth String Orchestra. The orchestra will meet for an open house at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Cary High School orchestra room.

Auditions for the other groups will be held Aug. 24 to Aug. 27 by appointment.
