West Tenn strikes first

— Former N.C. State standout Matt Mangini capped a six-run rally in the first inning with a three-run homer to send the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to a 7-4 win over the Carolina Mudcats in the opener of their five-game series Thursday night.

Carolina right-hander Luis Montano (0-2) got off to a rough start in the first. The first three batters singled to load the bases, and he surrendered two bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly before Mangini's blast.

The Mudcats got three runs in the sixth on Todd Frazier's RBI double and Shaun Cumberland's two-run homer off West Tenn starter Daniel Christensen (1-6).

Juan Francisco added an RBI single in the seventh for Carolina.
