Archer Lodge's future up for vote

From Staff ReportsAugust 12, 2009

Voters will decide this fall whether the Johnston County crossroads community of Archer Lodge will become a full-fledged town.

The state House of Representatives passed a bill Monday night that sets the stage for the referendum; the Senate passed the same bill last week. Registered voters within the town's proposed boundaries will be eligible to vote on the measure Nov. 3.

The community of about 3,000 lies between Clayton and Wendell.

Those who favor incorporation believe the move would give residents more control over growth in the community. Others plan to vote against it because a town would mean new property taxes. The initial rate would be 8 cents per $100 of valuation.

If Archer Lodge is incorporated, the initial town government would include a mayor and a five-person council.
