Confident in probe

August 18, 2009

As president of the association that represents the more than 1,200 bail agents that operate in our state, I am never pleased to read a story like the one that ran Aug. 14 ("State probes claims of bail bond kickbacks").

The private bail industry provides a much-needed service to help keep our judicial system running smoothly at no additional cost to North Carolina taxpayers. As an industry, we insist that our members be held to the highest of professional standards and that they operate as respectful members of the state's justice system.

We appreciate that our industry is regulated and licensed through the N.C. Department of Insurance, and we are fully confident that the department and the State Bureau of Investigation will investigate and respond appropriately with any action it deems necessary regarding this situation.
