NIE | News in Education

welcome to news in education!

nie is a cooperative effort of newspapers working with local schools to encourage the use of the newspaper as a tool for instruction and to promote literacy. Under the program, The News & Observer sponsors newspapers for teachers to use in their classrooms. nie teachers also receive curriculum ideas, teaching materials and more.

nie Sponsorships

Donations, from corporate sponsors and subscribers enable The News & Observer to offer classroom sets of newspapers, materials and teacher workshops for CEU credit to public and private schools grades K-12 and accredited literacy programs in our home-delivery area. Teachers who participate in nie are assigned a sponsor to help cover the cost of their classroom newspapers.

When teachers receive their sponsors' names and addresses, we ask them to send a personal thank-you note or letters or pictures from their students. Our sponsors love hearing that their donations are being used in the classroom; this keeps them returning! We in NIE also appreciate receiving copies of teacher/student letters to hear how newspapers are being used in the classroom.

Vacation Donations:
Our regular newspaper subscribers also help sponsor newspapers to classrooms by making vacation donations. When they are going on vacation and call customer service (829-4700 locally or 1-800-522-4205) for long distance to stop their newspapers, they ask to donate their funds for that week to NIE.

Bill donations:
Subscribers may check a box provided on their bills to donate any amount to nie.
