Painful profits

August 23, 2009

President Obama thinks of himself as a latter-day Henry Clay, the master of compromise. Unfortunately, our health-care crisis can't be handled that way. You are either for a government-centered or corporate-controlled system with no middle ground, a point that explains why independent hospitals and doctors are disappearing fast.

For my money, government-centered is a better idea since it's intuitive that profits come at the expense of care. If allowed to continue, that profit taking will force a lifestyle on us that is shorter and poorer.
