Zebulon teen dies in crash

A teenager died Saturday evening after losing control of his car and hitting a tree on U.S.64 in eastern Wake County.

Patrick Michael McLaughlin Jr., 17, of Zebulon was traveling eastbound near Lizard Lick Road when he lost control of his 1998 Mercury Marquis and hit a tree shortly after 5 p.m., according to the state Highway Patrol.

McLaughlin went off the left side of the road, hit a guardrail and swerved off the right side of the road, where he hit the tree.

According to the Highway Patrol, McLaughlin was not under the influence of alcohol. The Highway Patrol is unsure of what caused him to lose control.

McLaughlin was a senior at East Wake High School.
