RALEIGH — The beach at Lake Wheeler reopened in time for the holiday weekend Friday after high levels of bacteria forced its closure earlier this week.
Routine tests Monday found that bacteria exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, making it unsafe for swimming or other activities where someone's head is submerged in water.
The beach was closed, and sunfish and kayak rentals were suspended, until Friday, when the bacteria had tested at safe levels for two consecutive days. The lake remained open all week for activities such as fishing and water skiing, Wake County officials said.
Wake officials said people should always shower and wash hands with soap and water after swimming in area lakes.
