KNIGHTDALE -- Police charged a 17-year-old driver today with felony death by motor vehicle for an accident in which another 17-year-old was fatally thrown from the bed of a pickup truck.

Benjamin H. Evans, 17, of 2724 Auburn Knightdale Road in Raleigh, turned himself in today and was released from the Wake County jail after posting a $30,000 bond. Authorities said Evans had previously been charged with driving while impaired and careless and reckless driving for the Aug. 28 accident.

Evans was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger when the accident occurred about 10:20 p.m. on Onyx Lane in the Emerald Point subdivision, less than a mile from Knightdale High School, Lt. David Simmons said. Four teens were riding in the truck, including two on the bed.

Police found an injured Stephen J. Mattress, 17, lying on Onyx Lane. He later died of his injuries at the hospital.

Wake County school officials said Evans and Mattress were both seniors at Knightdale High School.
