Debutante accused of dealing cocaine

September 18, 2009

— A Nag's Head debutante is facing criminal drug charges after police found about $15,000 to $20,000 worth of cocaine at her apartment Tuesday.

Eliza McQuail Vaughan, 21, a UNC-Chapel Hill student chosen from among 227 young women in North Carolina for the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh's Debutante Ball in 2007, is charged with conspiracy, cocaine trafficking, possession with intent to sell, maintaining a dwelling for drug sales and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jonathan Ray Plymale, 22, faces the same charges after Chapel Hill police arrested the pair in Vaughan's apartment, 211 Church St. C4, where they found 197.6 grams, or about 7 ounces, of cocaine. Police found another 121 grams, or about 4.3 ounces, in Plymale's room at 107 Fraternity Court, according to Lt. Kevin Gunter. Local law enforcement estimates the street value of cocaine around $90 a gram.

At Vaughan's apartment, police arrested three others on charges of cocaine possession: Benjamin Thomas Nash, 24, with 0.4 grams; Hugh Graham Jones, 22, with 1.2 grams; and sophomore Julianne Kornegay Howard, 19, with 1.4 grams. Police also charged Nash with possessing 4 grams of marijuana.
