Socialist's statements

September 22, 2009

I read the Sept. 17 letter "Creeping socialism" and was curious about the reader's quote of Socialist Norman Thomas: "I no longer need to run as a presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform." There appears to be no evidence Norman Thomas made this statement in a 1944 speech, as widely rumored on right-wing blogs. Ronald Reagan may have popularized the misquote when running for public office.

There is evidence Thomas made this statement: The difference between Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats have accepted some ideas of Socialism cheerfully, while Republicans have accepted them reluctantly.
