I recently was on Sunset Lake Road driving toward Apex, about a half-mile from the Sunset Lake-Holly Springs Road intersection. Traffic had slowed and then stopped for a scared, confused puppy trying to find her way to her house nearby.
The brief wait proved too much for one driver who sped around the waiting traffic in the wrong lane and proceeded to strike and kill the puppy. The owners watched in horror as the incident unfolded. And then to my shock, the driver checked his rearview mirror and sped away. This is a true definition of cowardice. It was a clean kill and a clean getaway.
I watched as drivers pulled their cars to the shoulder of the road, some trying to get a license tag number, some asking each other about the puppy. I watched the passengers in my car shed tears.
