The LeBron and Shaq Show is off and running.
NBA icons, All-Stars and A-plus-list celebrities LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal made their debut as Cleveland teammates on Tuesday night in the host Cavaliers' 92-87 preseason-opening victory over the Charlotte Bobcats.
The two are hoping to end this city's pro sports championship drought stretching to 1964, and while they are as much as nine months away from accomplishing that goal, it's already clear their pairing will be fun to watch.
James, wearing a pink pair of his signature Nikes for breast cancer awareness month, scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes. O'Neal, who said his goal is to "win a ring for the King" in Cleveland, scored six points and added three rebounds and a block in 15 minutes. Neither played in the second half.
D.J. Augustin, whose third-year option was exercised before the game, scored 12 for the Bobcats. Charlotte was without injured starters Tyson Chandler (ankle surgery) and Boris Diaw (ankle sprain).
Iverson injured: Allen Iverson's debut with the Memphis Grizzlies will have to wait.
The guard strained his left hamstring during a scrimmage on Sunday in Birmingham, Ala., and he was held out of the Grizzlies' opening preseason game on Tuesday night against Washington.
Iverson, 34, is scheduled to have an MRI exam today in Memphis, and he also will miss tonight's home game against Oklahoma City.
GMs look for a repeat: NBA general managers predict repeats this season for the Lakers and LeBron James.
The league executives who responded to the eighth annual NBA.com GM survey picked the Lakers to win another NBA title -- though their opponent is unclear -- and saw James as the runaway winner of another MVP award.
Other teams selected to win their divisions Tuesday included San Antonio in the Southwest and Portland edging Denver in the Northwest.
General managers were not permitted to vote for their own teams or players.
Stern hopeful for London game: The NBA is still planning to play a regular-season game in London before the 2012 Olympics are hosted by the British capital, although commissioner David Stern said Tuesday that no schedule has yet been set.
Hawks star eyes free agency: Atlanta's Joe Johnson, a three-time All-Star, top scorer and captain, plans to play out the final year of his contract this season and enter free agency instead of accepting the team's offer of an extension.
The Hawks offered a four-year, $60 million extension this summer, but Johnson plans to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Deng shines in London: Luol Deng, a former Duke star who was raised in London after his family fled war-torn Sudan, finished with 18 points in the Utah Jazz's 102-101 exhibition loss to the Chicago Bulls on Monday at sold-out O2 Arena.
He left the game in the third quarter and did not return.
