RALEIGH -- School board candidate Cathy Truitt filed paperwork today with the Wake County Board of Elections requesting a runoff in the District 2 race.
Truitt, an education consultant and retired educator, finished second in District 2 to John Tedesco, a Big Brothers Big Sisters official, Pending certification of the election results next week, Truitt and Tedesco would oppose each other in a Nov. 3 runoff.
Three candidates who oppose the diversity policy easily won on Tuesday. Tedesco also opposes the diversity policy and backs neighborhood schools.
Pending the outcome in District 2, which covers Fuquay-Varina, Garner and Willow Spring, the rest of the board is split 4-4 on the diversity policy.
Truitt stressed today that if she’s elected she will not vote to support continuing the diversity policy. She said that she would try to promote diversity instead by expanding magnet school offerings.
“Forced busing is dead,” Truitt said today. “Now that busing is out of the way we can move forward.”
Truitt claimed that a victory by Tedesco would lead to segregation of schools.
Truitt said she would reach out to win the support of incumbent board member Horace Tart, who finished 59 votes behind Truitt in third place. Tart had backed the diversity policy.
