As requested Monday, Tank Tyler reported to a meeting with Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli.

Pioli told Tyler the Chiefs had decided to trade him.

Tyler's initial reaction?

"My heart dropped," he said.

But that changed when he was told the team that had acquired him was the Carolina Panthers - near his hometown of Fayetteville and his alma mater, N.C. State.

"My heart started smiling again," Tyler said.

The move brought Tyler back home to the 4-3 defense that he has played most of his life, including his first two seasons at Kansas City after the Chiefs picked him in the third round of the 2007 draft.

Tyler is in the final year of a three-year contract but can't become an unrestricted free agent until at least 2011.

Reed says he's sorry: Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed has apologized to his teammates, saying he didn't mean to cause a distraction by getting involved in a run-in with Pittsburgh police several hours after kicking two field goals against the Cleveland Browns.

The incident was the second involving the North Carolina alum this year.

The NFL is investigating Reed's latest off-field problem, in which he was cited for simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after allegedly scuffling with police officers outside a bar near Heinz Field. The incident happened several hours after the Steelers (4-2) beat the Browns 27-14 on Sunday.

Green returns to Packers: The Green Bay Packers have signed running back Ahman Green.

Faced with a need at the position after third-down back DeShawn Wynn hurt a knee, the Packers turned to Green, who has been out of football since being cut by Houston in February. He left the Packers to sign with the Texans as a free agent for the 2007 season but struggled, gaining 554 yards in 14 games over two seasons.

Jets players fined: New York Jets safety James Ihedigbo and linebacker Marques Murrell were each fined $5,000 by the NFL for their roles in a scuffle with the Buffalo Bills' Derek Fine.
