A Wake Forest man was killed in a one-car crash early Sunday at Interstate 440 southwest of downtown Raleigh after being ejected from his car, police said. The wreck happened about 2:50 a.m. on the Jones Franklin Road overpass.
Edward James Smith, 21, of Creek Pine Drive in Wake Forest was not wearing his seat belt when his 2003 Acura spun out of control, hitting a guardrail and a concrete barrier before flipping over, police said. Smith was thrown into the median of the freeway below, police said.
A police report said his vehicle was traveling about 70 mph. The speed limit there is 35 mph, police said. It is not known whether alcohol was a factor.
