Recovering from a late collapse, Troy Matteson birdied the second playoff hole from 3 feet to beat Jamie Lovemark and Rickie Fowler in the Frys.com Open on Sunday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., for his second PGA Tour victory.
Matteson bogeyed the final two holes of regulation to fall into the playoff with Lovemark and Fowler, who are both seeking their PGA Tour cards.
Following consecutive 61s on Friday and Saturday, Matteson closed with a 68 to match Fowler and Lovemark, who had 64s, at 18 under.
AT&T Championship: Phil Blackmar won his first Champions Tour title, birdieing five of his first six holes en route to a 7-under 64 and a one-stroke victory over Jay Haas, Tom Kite and Andy Bean at San Antonio.
Blackmar, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour who joined the Champions Tour late in 2007, had a 10-under 203 total on the Oak Hills course. The 6-foot-7 former University of Texas player earned $255,000 and jumped 27 spots in the Charles Schwab Cup standings to 30th to take the last spot in the season-ending event in Sonoma, Calif.
Nationwide Tour Championship: Matt Every won the season-ending event to earn a 2010 PGA Tour card with a 10th-place finish on the money list, closing with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Michael Sim in Charleston, S.C. Every earned $180,000 for his first tour win to jump from 49th to 10th on the money list with $300,936, with the top 25 earning PGA Tour cards.
Baghdatis wins in Stockholm
Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 7-5 on Sunday, winning the Stockholm Open for his third career ATP Tour singles title just a week after learning he had gained the event's main draw.
Baghdatis was playing a Challenger event in Tashkent when he got the news. The 66th-ranked Cypriot advanced to the final against his friend and training partner with a walkover after top-seeded Robin Soderling withdrew with an elbow injury.
Kremlin Cup: Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-4, and Francesca Schiavone of Italy defeated Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-0 of Belarus. Youzhny earned his fifth career title and extended Russia's winning streak at the Moscow event to six straight years. Schiavone won her second career title.
Luxembourg Open: Unseeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland won her first WTA Tour title, beating sixth-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-2, 7-5 in the final. The 70th-ranked Bacsinszky secured her fourth upset victory this week by beating a player 42 places ahead of her in the rankings.
Revolution earns playoff berth
Jeff Larentowicz scored in the 79th minute Sunday to earn a playoff spot for the New England Revolution with a 1-0 win over the host Columbus Crew.
The victory in the MLS regular-season finale gave New England (11-10-9) 42 points and dropped the Colorado Rapids from the eight-team playoffs.
Columbus (13-7-10) already had secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Dynamo 3, Chivas USA 2: Houston scored two goals in a three-minute span midway through the first half, then held off host Chivas USA to finish second in the Western Conference.
The Dynamo (13-8-9) had 48 points along with Los Angeles, which held the tiebreaker over the Dynamo for the top spot in the conference and will meet Seattle in the playoffs. Chivas USA (13-11-6) dropped to fourth in the West with 45 points and will play archrival Los Angeles in the postseason.
IHRA crowns season champs
Three winners and three champions were crowned in the professional categories during final eliminations at the IHRA World Finals on Sunday at Rockingham Dragway.
Rookie Del Cox Jr. (Top Fuel) and seasoned vet John Montecalvo (Elite Motorsports Pro Stock) won their first career championships, and Kenny Lang (Pro Modified) got his second straight title.
And while those three were busy winning titles, Bruce Litton (Top Fuel), Chris Russo (Pro Modified) and Bob Bertsch (Elite Motorsports Pro Stock) took care of winning the races.
