The Tar Heels ditched last week's navy blue ensemble for all-white uniforms, but Virginia Tech made some fashion news by wearing orange jerseys with maroon pants for the first time under Frank Beamer. It was Tech's annual "Orange Effect" game, where all of the students and most fans wear orange.
North Carolina punter Grant Shallock had the best tackle of the night, albeit one of dubious legality, when he clotheslined punt returner Jayron Hosley along the sideline. Shallock, who at 6-foot-7 is 9 inches taller than Hosley, caught Hosley around the helmet and sent the Hokie tumbling to deny what looked like a sure touchdown.
Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor is one of the most dangerous and creative players in the ACC, but his unwillingness to throw the ball away hurt the Hokies in the first half. He was sacked three times after eluding the initial passrushers but holding the ball too long trying to make a play.
