Thomas Graham of Cary Academy repeated as the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association boys 3-A cross country champion, while Ravenscroft freshman Wesley Frazier won the girls title and Durham Academy claimed the boys team championship Friday afternoon.
Graham cruised to his second title, covering 3.1 miles in 15 minutes, 38 seconds at Hagen-Stone Park in Greensboro.
"He took the lead at about the half-mile mark and just pulled away from everyone," Cary Academy coach Conrad Hall said. "It was a quality field, but Thomas is an outstanding runner."
Durham Academy won the team championship, 54-75, but Graham was excited by his team's effort.
"We were seeded sixth or seventh and ran faster than we have all year," Graham said. "The team's finish really made the day."
Durham Academy was led by Carl Ward, Fred Ward and Erik Kraus, who were second, third and fifth. Michael Cunningham was 15th, and David Bradley was 28th.
Frazier won in a time of 17:36. Ravenscroft was third in the team standings. Charlotte Latin won the team title.
NCISAA soccer: St. David's, the top seed in the 2-A soccer tournament, defeated Caldwell Academy 3-2 to move to today's championship match at 2 p.m. at High Point Westchester Country Day.
Blake McCauley, Sam McClenney and Billy Morris each had one goal for St. David's (20-1-1).
NCISAA volleyball: Undefeated Cary Academy had no trouble in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 3-A volleyball tournament.
The Chargers defeated Charlotte Country Day 25-12, 25-16, 25-11 on Friday morning and added a 25-9, 25-12, 25-15 victory over Hickory Grove in the afternoon.
Cary Academy (30-0) will play Charlotte Latin (26-1) at 11 a.m. at Charlotte Latin for the title.
Ravenscroft lost to Charlotte Latin in the quarterfinals of the 3-A tournament, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21. The Ravens finished 12-10.
St. David's was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2-A tournament by top-seeded High Point Christian, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16.
NCISAA tennis: Ravenscroft defeated St. Mary's 7-2 to advance to the finals of the NCISAA girls dual-team tennis. The Ravens (22-1) play in the title match at 9 a.m. today at Charlotte Providence Day.
NCHSAA tennis: Green Hope's Melissa Kandinata advanced to the semifinals of the 4-A girls tennis singles and will play defending state champion Grace Baker of Charlotte Myers Park at Millbrook Exchange Park in Saturday's semifinals.
ECH's Tamara Hill and Megan Huang will play Broughton's Katie Davidson and Hamilton Lovett, while Broughton's Asha Lyengar and Katie Kane will play the Wildcats' Tessa Johnson and Tegan Flynn in 9 a.m. semifinal matches.
In 1-A, Lori Wang of Raleigh Charter advanced to the singles championship. She will play Megan Shelton of East Surry for the title at the Cary Tennis Center.
Teresa Pincus and Laura Outlaw of Durham Science & Math will play Ellie Case and Jordan Gwyn of Mount Airy for the 1-A doubles title.
Tori Helpingstine and Hannah Kimbrough of Chapel Hill advanced to the doubles semifinals in the 3-A tournament at the Burlington Parks and Recreation Tennis Center.
The girls dual-team tennis tournament continues Tuesday.
NCHSAA volleyball: Undefeated Wakefield (25-0) is at home today at 4 p.m. against Cap Seven rival Enloe (23-3) in the 4-A quarterfinals. The winner will advance to next week's state semifinals.
In other semifinals, Chapel Hill (24-5) is at Cardinal Gibbons (22-1) at 1 p.m. in 3-A; Providence Grove (23-4) is at Cedar Ridge (23-4) at 3 p.m. in 2-A; and Raleigh Charter (16-3) travels to Pender (26-2) in 1-A.
NCHSAA cross country: The loaded Mid-East 4-A regional championships are scheduled for the Wake Med Soccer Complex.
