Defenseman Jay Harrison, whom the Carolina Hurricanes picked up in free agency in July, has been reassigned to the Albany River Rats, the team's AHL affiliate.
Harrison, 27, had scored one goal and two assists in 10 games this season with 27 penalty minutes and had a minus-4 rating while averaging 12:05 of ice time per game. Harrison had been placed on waivers Monday.
Harrison, at 6 feet 4 and 211 pounds, was brought in to add depth to the Hurricanes defense, which general manager Jim Rutherford hoped to bolster with size.
But on the heels of the Canes' 2-8-3 start, Rutherford said Monday he took responsibility for the slow start.
"I thought adding some players would make the team better, but it hasn't," he said. "Maybe we have too many veterans."
Rutherford said changes were on the way, that he will be looking to make trades early this season, and that some of the younger players may be called up from Albany.
Sale of Coyotes to NHL closes: Final papers have been signed closing the sale of the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes to the NHL.
Notification of the closure was filed Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Attorneys signed final papers on Monday and $13.3 million was transferred into an account that will hold the money until dispersal is determined.
In all, the NHL paid about $140 million for the team.
The NHL plans to resell the team, preferably to an owner that would keep the franchise in Glendale, Ariz.
Tuesday's results
Red Wings 2, Bruins 0: Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored in the first period, then Chris Osgood finished with his first shutout of the season to give host Detroit Red Wings a 2-0 win over the Boston Bruins.
Osgood made 29 saves. He also got help from the posts behind him to prevent a goal in both the first and second periods for the 50th shutout of his career.
Tim Thomas had 24 saves for Boston, which fell under .500 with their third loss in four games.
Thrashers 5, Canadiens 4: Colby Armstrong scored 13:14 into the third period and Atlanta earned its first regulation win in Montreal in over five years.
Armstrong scored his second of the season to restore Atlanta's one-goal lead just 24 seconds after Montreal drew even for the second time in the third.
Rich Peverley had a goal and two assists, including his third point of the game with a cross-crease setup pass on Pavel Kubina's power-play goal that gave the Thrashers a 4-3 edge 4:10 into the third period.
Vincent Lecavalier also scored for the Lightning, who won their first road game of the season.
Late Monday
Kings 5, Coyotes 3: Drew Doughty scored the go-ahead goal with 4:51 remaining as visiting Los Angeles rallied for a win.
