I was pleased to read of the statement signed by former UNC Board of Governors members opposing the requests for significant tuition hikes at our universities.
Less time on campus
The Feb. 7 Other Opinion article "Reality 101 on campus" by Stan Jones makes a great point that cutting a student's time on campus cuts costs.
Quality, affordability
Ia a Feb. 5 Point of View article, the chairman of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, Wade Hargrove, argued that Chapel Hill's campus is poised to slip into mediocrity unless the Board of Governors increases tuition significantly.
Room for all
Regarding the Feb. 4 letter "Washington fading": Why is it always an "either/or" formulation for some people? Both Washington and MLK can be admired and studied for their efforts on behalf of freedom.
What tobacco built
Regarding the Feb. 9 letter "A phantom phrase": The writer should understand why the term Tobacco Road is used, especially in the Triangle.
Onus on parents
I would like to thank the writer of the Feb. 4 letter "Family factors." She put the responsibility of raising a child where it belongs. With the parents.

A San Diego judge ruled that a lawsuit filed by PETA seeking to free five SeaWorld orcas could not be brought under the anti-slavery 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution because the amendment pertains to humans, not animals.
Irresponsibility pays
Regarding the Feb. 9 article "$26B housing deal backed": Gosh, I was all excited at the free money being handed out! Unfortunately, I realized I had been too responsible in buying a house within my means and keeping my payments current.
Beauty in teachings
In his Point of View "Catholics, conscience and health insurance" Feb. 4, William Powers misrepresented the importance, history and perspective of the church's teaching on human sexuality as it relates to contraception.
Cats at the bottom
Regarding your Feb. 3 article "Feral felines spared; future policy unclear"), it seems that advocates of trap, neuter and release are placing the welfare of feral cats above other animals, particularly wildlife.
