Winning day for Wilson despite picks

RALEIGH -- Quarterback Russell Wilson was eager to see tape of Saturday's game, and not just because N.C. State broke a four-game losing streak with a 38-31 win over Maryland.

Wilson threw a career-high three interceptions. Alex Wujciak returned one 70 yards for a touchdown.

"They made a couple nice plays," Wilson said. "I could have done a little bit better job."

Nonetheless, Wilson said he thought he played well. In many respects he did. He threw for 343 yards, just 6 yards short of his career high.

He completed 25 of 38 passes despite at least four dropped balls by his wide receivers. When his receivers were covered in the end zone in the third quarter, he outraced the defense to the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown run.

But Maryland's blitzing defense forced him to get rid of the ball quickly. Many times the Terrapins' pressure left receivers open for Wilson to find in the middle of the field.

It also might have caused a few errors in judgment.

Hit angers Friedgen: Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen was upset after the game at a play that put defensive lineman Isaiah Ross out for the season.

Maryland defensive tackle Travis Ivey said an N.C. State player speared Ross in the leg. Ross suffered a torn knee ligament and is out for the season.

Friedgen said the referees apparently didn't see what happened.

"The guy should have been thrown out of the game," Friedgen told the Washington Post.

It was unclear which N.C. State player injured Ross.

Wallace steps in: N.C. State starting left offensive tackle Jake Vermiglio became ill Saturday morning and couldn't play.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Wallace replaced him and had his best performance of the season. Wallace didn't give up a sack against a blitzing defense.

"Experience is a big thing," Wallace said. "Playing time has helped me."
