Inside the game
N.C. State defensive coordinator Mike Archer used a different strategy to cope with the loss of middle linebacker Ray Michel to an ankle injury as N.C. State downed Maryland 38-31.
Instead of moving Dwayne Maddox over from outside linebacker to Michel's spot as Archer did against Florida State, the coordinator made Michel's regular backup, Sterling Lucas, the starter and left Maddox in his usual spot on the boundary. Unofficially, Maddox tied for the team lead with eight tackles, and Lucas made six tackles.
Game balls
OT Andrew Wallace: Redshirt freshman didn't learn until minutes before the game that he would be starting at left tackle because Jake Vermiglio was ill. Wallace didn't give up a sack against the Terps.
S Clem Johnson: Senior tied for the team lead with eight tackles unofficially and was solid in coverage in the middle of the field.
Looking ahead
Clemson (6-3, 4-2 ACC) enters Saturday's noon game (WRAL, WNCT) at Carter-Finley Stadium with a lot to play for. The Tigers, who have won four in a row, can clinch a spot in the ACC championship game with wins in their final two conference games against N.C. State and Virginia.
N.C. State (4-5, 1-4) needs wins over Clemson, Virginia Tech and North Carolina - which all have winning records - to become eligible for a bowl.
