Triangle area cities and towns should stop making excuses and standing in the way of innovative ideas and progress.
A phantom phrase
I nearly burst a lung reading a column about the Duke-Carolina game Feb. 8 even though I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. And I grew up in Eastern North Carolina, land of the golden leaf.
Boost productivity
Regarding the plea for higher tuition by the chair of the Board of Trustees at UNC-Chapel Hill ("A vital increase in UNC's tuition," Feb. 5 Point of View), there seems to be an automatic assumption that increased revenues are the primary, and possibly only, means by which UNC-CH can maintain its quality.
Burr on the inside?
My jaw is still on the floor after reading the Feb. 6 article "Burr defends 'no' on insider trading act" about Sen. Richard Burr's vote.
UNC tuition: Resist funding cuts
In his Feb. 5 Point of View article ("A vital increase in UNC's tuition"), UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees chair Wade H. Hargrove makes a compelling case as to the need for reinstating the funding cuts that have ravaged the UNC system, particularly the UNC-CH campus, in the past several years.
Raise the results
The never-ending hysteria (an 8 percent increase in tuition is labeled a "skyrocketing" cost) over education funding in this state obscures the two main issues.
No good news there
The Obama administration takes credit for 243,000 new jobs and a decrease in the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent. Then The N&O touts this drop on its Feb. 7 editorial page.
HOA expenses
To quote from your Feb. 3 editorial "Whoa, HOA": "No homeowners association should have the power of foreclosure, end of story, period." You surely must have years of experience with HOAs after such a definitive statement.
Tolled and tracked
It is worrisome about the government expanding passive electronic tracking of the populace ("Tolls proposed for I-95," Feb. 5). It started with the recent use of toll scanners on the Triangle Expressway and is now proposed for I-95.
Paycheck power
How low will we go in this global race to the bottom before we realize that workers' buying power is central to the economy? Sen. Kay Hagan's bill to exclude more technology workers (Feb. 5 article) from overtime pay is exactly the opposite of what we need in this economy.
