Now that we have elected a new school board in Wake County, please allow me to offer a helpful suggestion. A recent Point of View article by Jason Langberg and Cary Brege questioned the effectiveness of long-term suspensions in Wake. Here's an alternative.

Instead of long-term (or short-term in some cases) suspensions, students guilty of continually disruptive behavior would not be permitted to return to school on their own until their parents accompany the students during their daily school schedule for at least one week. This connects the students' behavior exactly where it belongs: with parents. After parents miss work (and pay) for a week, they will get their students in line.

This proposal would not cost Wake County taxpayers one dime and could be implemented immediately.
