From staff reports

DURHAM -- A firefighter was injured Thursday after the floor of a burning apartment collapsed under him.

Firefighters were called to the Royal Oaks Apartments at 3545 Mayfair St. about 6 a.m. The blaze had started in the basement and spread to the first and second floors.

Part of the first floor gave way under two firefighters, Assistant Chief Dan Curia said.

One firefighter, whose name was not immediately available, suffered a knee injury. He was not hospitalized.

Investigators are determining the cause of the blaze, which displaced 14 adults and six children in 10 apartments.

There have been five other fires at the apartment complex since 2004, including two in the same building as the fire Thursday morning.
