The writer of the Nov. 14 People's Forum letter captioned "Involuntary speech" did not see anything honorable in Bob Hall's Nov. 5 Point of View piece "Honorable alternatives for campaign financing." The letter-writer complained that public financing forces taxpayers to financially support candidates they disagree with.
He is correct. But let's follow through on the logic. Assume that the writer and I are going to vote for different candidates. It is true that his taxes are used to finance my candidate, but my taxes are used to finance his candidate. So the money is a wash. Both candidates are funded equally and can spend their time listening to their constituents rather than constantly having to raise money.
The elected candidate then can represent her or his constituents rather than the deep-pocket special-interest groups that pay for access with their large campaign donations.
