FROM STAFF REPORTS

It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but the Triangle will be filled with the Christmas spirit today as the 65th annual Raleigh Christmas parade takes place.

Former Carolina Hurricanes player Glen Wesley will serve as grand marshal of the parade, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. at Hillsborough and St. Mary's streets in downtown Raleigh. The parade will head east on Hillsborough to the state Capitol, wind its way to Fayetteville Street, then turn south before ending at Fayetteville and Lenoir streets. It's about a 1.4-mile route.

Presented by the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association and other partners, the parade is expected to last about 21/2 hours and will be broadcast live on WRAL-TV starting at 10 a.m.

In preparation for the parade, Raleigh police will close the 700 through 900 blocks of Hillsborough Street and the 100 through 500 blocks of St. Mary's Street from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The parade will disrupt downtown traffic, particularly on McDowell and Dawson streets through the heart of the city.
