From staff reports

A 20-year-old Marine from Camp Lejeune was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday, the U.S. Defense Department announced this morning.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas J. Hand of Kansas City, Mo., was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.

Nicholas was among at least three North Carolina-based troops killed in Afghanistan in recent days. Two Fort Bragg paratroopers were killed Thursday when a bomb in a vehicle detonated near their base in Zabul province.
