The North Carolina women's soccer team won NCAA titles in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2008. The program also won nine ACC championships during the decade, including this season.

Heather O'Reilly, who played for UNC from 2003-06, talks about the 2006 title:

"A championship is really special. When you think about it, not too many varsity athletes get to go out on top. To go out a champion was really, really meaningful.

"When I'm asked about some of my best soccer moments, even though I've been to two Olympic Games and played in one World Cup, that senior season is right up there with my most meaningful championships.

"That year, we had a whole new team. People thought it might be a rebuilding year. We wound up losing our first game of the season that year to Texas A&M. That got people talking that it would be a down year for Carolina. But we didn't look back and won every game thereafter. It was very rewarding because I led a very dynamic group of young players.

"I'm doing the things I would be doing if I won that championship or not. I'm playing professional soccer and competing with the U.S. National team. But being challenged that season, and seeing it pay off in the end, helped my growth as a person and soccer player overall.

"Winning that championship, in the way we did, lifted my confidence as a player and broadened me as a leader. I learned that to be great in anything, you can never just play it safe. You have to take risks and put yourself out there. I'll carry those lessons in leadership and team-buildings after my days in soccer are done."
