This fall's rainy weather has taken an unfortunate toll on area high school football fields.
Harnett Central already has deemed its field unplayable for Friday night and has moved its third-round playoff game against Middle Creek to 1 p.m. Friday at Campbell University.
Southern Durham will play New Hanover at Durham Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
"I don't think we can play on our field again this year," Southern coach Adrian Jones said. "Our grass is gone."
South Johnston coach Joe Salas said the Trojans' field is a mess, too.
"We seriously thought about moving the game somewhere else, but we like our mud hole," he said.
Hillside girls get national attention: The Durham Hillside girls basketball team will be on a national stage in December when it participates in the first National Title IX Invitational Holiday Conference and Classic in Washington, D.C.
Hillside coach Ovester Grays has built an outstanding program that stresses academics. Study hall for potential players begins the first week of school and freshmen are expected to have a 4.0 average for the first semester if they want to try out for the team.
The Hornets graduated seven players off last year's team and all are on Division I rosters this fall.
Grays has a 274-55 overall record in his 12 years at the school.
The Title IX Invitational is more than a tournament. Schools are expected to exchange ideas and discuss how to blend athletics with academic excellence.
Billerman notches 200th: Ravenscroft boys basketball coach Kevin Billerman recorded his 200th victory at the school last week when the Ravens defeated Northern Durham 78-53.
Billerman is in his 10th season at the private Raleigh high school. He has a 200-78 record.
His teams have won eight regular-season conference championships, seven conference tournament titles and have advanced to the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association championship game three times.
NCISAA All-State: Ravenscroft junior running back Connor Gonet and senior defensive back Shane Bird was named to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association All-State football team.
