The long Thanksgiving weekend began tragically in the Triangle when six people died in three separate traffic accidents.
Ricky Norris, 55, died Thursday about 3 p.m. after his motorcycle collided head-on with a pickup truck east of Benson in Johnston County. Trooper D.L. Braswell of the state Highway Patrol said Norris crossed the center line after navigating a curve on Stricklands Crossroads Road at the intersection of Juniper Road.
He died at the scene. The truck's driver was not injured.
In Granville County, a Louisburg woman and her two young children died Wednesday night in a one-car accident.
Melissa Jo Bullock, 26, was driving west on Mays Store Road at 9:40 p.m. when her car went off the road. She over-corrected into a ditch and flipped into a tree.
Authorities said Bullock was transported to WakeMed, where she was pronounced dead. Her two children, Georgia Leigh Godfrey, 5, and Wyatt Anthony Godfrey, 4, died at the scene.
Two women from Georgia were killed about 10 a.m. Thursday in Orange County, after their SUV collided with a pickup truck near the intersection of N.C.157 and N.C. 57. Trooper Adam Kerr said it appeared that the driver of the SUV failed to yield at a stop sign, and the pickup struck the SUV on the driver's side.
The two women in the SUV, whose names have not been released pending the notification of relatives, died at the scene. The pickup's driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
