N.C. State freshman forward Richard Howell made his collegiate debut in the second half and produced two points and two rebounds in seven minutes. Howell, rated the 65th-best prospect in the freshman class by Scout.com, missed the first four games of the season recovering from surgery on his left knee.

"Just getting out there was good for him as well for us," coach Sidney Lowe said.

Howell, a 6-foot-8, 260-pound power forward, eventually should improve the Wolfpack's rebounding. A smaller New Orleans lineup finished with 14 offensive rebounds, eight more than State, and 33 total, same as State.

Senior guard Farnold Degand's academic suspension continues. Degand missed his fifth straight game but was on the State bench in street clothes. Lowe said Degand was eligible but that there was a timetable for his return.

Free throws continue to be the Wolfpack's best friend. State attempted 25, compared with four for the perimeter-oriented Privateers. So far this season, State has made more free throws (83) than its opponents have attempted (67).
