This is listening?

I attended the first meeting of the new Wake County school board and was stunned by the arrogance of the new board members. They introduced eight new agenda items without submitting them online for public viewing or even to their colleagues on the board. These agenda items represented huge changes to our school system.

This was an act of cowards and showed a complete lack of respect for the parents they claim to represent: all Wake County parents.

One of the platforms the new board members campaigned on was willingness and desire to listen to parents. Their actions Dec. 1 were in complete contradiction to that campaign promise. We can only conclude they are afraid of the overall public and concerned with only a small fraction of Wake County students and families.

Less than 4 percent of countywide voters elected the new board members. It is clear they think the voices of the other 96 percent are irrelevant.

Lynn Edmonds, Raleigh
