RALEIGH -- A former state Department of Transportation engineer was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to three years and one month in prison for extortion.

Dalton Ray Alligood Jr. pleaded guilty to the charge in April.

Alligood was district engineer in charge of bridge maintenance in Pitt and Beaufort counties, where he supervised 32 employees and had authority to contract with private companies, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said an excavation company offered Alligood 10 percent kickbacks in exchange for more business. Alligood accepted, the prosecutors said, taking just under $30,000 in cash between 2004 and 2006.
