Carolina Hurricanes goalie Michael Leighton.

The Carolina Hurricanes placed goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers Sunday and reassigned forwards Patrick Dwyer and Jiri Tlusty to the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League.

Leighton was placed on waivers a week ago today, cleared waivers Tuesday and then was assigned Saturday to the River Rats. He is in the final year of a one-way contract that pays him $600,000 this season.

Dwyer and Tlusty were called up Friday from the River Rats and played in the Hurricanes' back-to-back road games Friday against the Washington Capitals and Saturday against the Ottawa Senators. Tlusty, who went to Carolina in a Dec. 3 trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, scored on his first shift against the Capitals.

Forward Sergei Samsonov, who missed two games with a lower-body injury, is expected to return this week. Reassigning Dwyer and Tlusty leaves the Canes with 11 forwards.
