After reading the Dec. 13 letter "Not professional," I felt compelled to respond.

I have had the most fortunate opportunity to work with the fourth-grade teacher team at an elementary school within the Wake County Public School System.

Working with these teachers allowed me to witness dedication and professionalism that matches the best of what you may see in the business world.

Many of these teachers are in the school building by 6:30 a.m. and remain in the building working until well after 6:00 p.m. The hours before and after school are spent planning for their classes, collaborating with other teachers, grading papers, meeting with parents and working with students that need additional help, not to mention the administration that comes along with the job plus the additional hours they work at home. Where can they squeeze in scheduled group planning outside the school day?

As teachers, they have accepted the responsibility to help these children today be who we need them to be tomorrow. They work hard to ensure today's elementary school children will be equipped and prepared to be successful - all this because they do have the students' interest in mind.
