CHAPEL HILL -- Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt welcomed a new collective art gallery to Franklin Street on Monday, calling it an important economic development tool and a jewel in the community's crown.

The 3,500-square-foot nonprofit gallery, named Frank, will open in early 2010 at 109 E. Franklin St. The result of a partnership between public, private and nonprofit supporters, it will feature the works of 25 member artists, in addition to pieces by some 50 regional and national artists who will sell their work there on consignment.

A $40,000 loan from the town's new Small Art Business Loan program helped provide startup costs.
