Drew McElveen, 17, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., sank a birdie putt from 20 feet on the third playoff hole to defeat CGA points leader Andy Knox, 17, of Cary and win the boys title at the 20th annual Carolinas PGA Charles Tilghman Junior Championship on Sunday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"It was a shootout all day between Andy and me," McElveen said in a CGA news release. "We were back and forth all day, and I knew the playoff wasn't going to be easy. I had been playing really solid golf all day, so I knew I had a good shot at it, and I came away with this one."

McElveen had rounds of 72 and 70 for a 2-under-par 142 on the Surf Golf and Beach Club course.

Knox didn't win the title, but he did secure his place on top of the CGA Carolinas Player of the Year standings.

"I really wanted this one, and obviously it meant something to me," Knox said. "I just couldn't put it together."

Patrick Sawry of Smithfield tied for fifth at 144, and Michael Hocker II of Chapel Hill shared 15th at 147.

A full field of 96 of the Carolinas' best junior boys and girls ages 13-18 competed in the 36-hole stroke-play event. Complete results are at share.triangle.com/play.
