DURHAM -- An elementary school in northeast Durham won approval from the county commissioners Monday, with an assurance that rare plants are safe.

The school will be built on 25acres at Hebron Road and Old Oxford Highway.

Plant ecologist Rob Evans of the state agriculture department raised a concern about the effect of required road improvements on endangered plants on a neighboring 60-acre state preserve.

Project landscape architect Dan Jewell said no construction is planned along the preserve's frontage.
